Bibliographies on family literacy, science, storytelling, volunteer management, math, ESOL, videos, employability, dialogue journals and domestic violence are available at the library.
The library has books and videos on teaching hands-on math . The manipulatives may be borrowed with the supporting materials.
The posters on the library walls are often admired.
These materials are available for loan. (We will even take them off the wall!) Many have suplementary materials with suggestions for classroom use. Posters include "Latina Women of Hope", Teaching Tolerance's "One World", "African Americans Who Made a Difference- Women of Hope" and ""Harmonious Connections: Math and Music" .
Call the librarian to request the loan of the Learning Disabilities or Employability Kits. These are boxed mini-libraries of excellent materials which are loaned for several weeks to programs for examination, study and use. An ALRI /SABES trainer will bring these materials to a program and introduce the staff to the materials.
After attending an ALRI workshop or class, visit the library and borrow related materials. Assign yourself some homework.
Give your Curriculum Frameworks project depth, breadth and standards by visiting the ALRI Library and researching new resources. Be sure to read the reference materials on copyright and fairuse.
New to the field? Need to renew your commitment? Read the classics of adult education -Paulo Freire, Malcolm Knowles, Patricia Cross, Stephen Brookfield, J.R. Kidd, and Elsa Auerbach.
Escape the phone, fax and other interruptions. Bring a colleague and your coffee and work together in the library.
The ALRI computer lab has T1 access for library users.
Beginners can receive help in learning to surf, search and research on the web. Experienced users will appreciate the fast access.
Settle down with the remote on the couch in the library and preview one of the library's over 200 videos. Many of these films have curriculum and classroom suggestions. Videos include "Changing the Rules: Teaching Math to Adult Learners", "Against the Odds: The Artists of the Harlem Renaissance", "The INS Citizenship Interview: Will They Pass?", "A Conversation with Alice Walker", Spike Lee's "Malcolm X", "Eyes on the Prize", and "I Want To Read".
