Library Visit Description

ALRI Library Stacks
This Virtual Visit to the ALRI Library in Boston was designed cooperatively by four teachers and administrators from Boston area adult education programs and ALRI staff. Sam Bernstein worked with Diane Paxton to organize and present the preliminary workshop on April 5, 1999.

The workshop was one in a four-part series, "Connecting Computers and Content in ESOL."
It simulated a student virtual visit project. The participants interviewed Librarian, Sandra Darling, and Computer Field Technogist, Akira Kamiya, and took photos of the library. They considered ways to organize and present the information so others could benefit from it. Following the interviews, teams mapped out the proposed site links, wrote up the questions and answers and designed a home page. Later, Sam put it all together visually so the participants could see the initial configuration. Finally, we all jotted down our reflections about the whole experience.

This is our visit to the ALRI Library. We hope you will learn about the library as a result of spending time at this site, as well as getting some ideas and inspiration about the potential for doing a virtual visit project with your own students.

The ALRI Library is available to ABE and ESOL teachers as well as staff and program coordinators. It contains a wealth of materials: videos, including feature films and documentaries, books, journals, newsletters, training kits, cassettes and software.
There is also an Internet lab with six computers.
