The Immigrant Learning Center, Inc. is located at 442 Main St., MaldenThe Immigrant Learning Center was opened in November 1992 by Diane Portnoy and Joan Broude. The first school was opened on Pleasant Street in Malden. It had only 3 rooms. When Diane and Joan made invitations, a lot of people came to register in this school but they admitted only 60 students because the school was small. After that, Diane looked for a bigger place with help and support of banks, churches, synagogues, etc. With thanks to their efforts, they have accomplished everything. Now, our school is located on Main Street. It's bigger than the first one. Our school has 280 students from 60 Countries, and a waiting list of 500.

ESL 4 Students interviewing Diane Portnoy, the Director of ILC 4/00In March, we interviewed Diane Portnoy, the director of our school. This school was born from the dream of wonderful women. Diane is a nice and important person. Her first reason to open this school is her heart for the people. One day she decided to face problems, and with Joan Broude, she opened this school in 1992. Why did she decide to open this school? During twenty years she was a teacher in Peabody. She saw about the immigrants and their difficulty with communication. Shehad in her mind that English isn’t her first language, and she remembered too, when she was a little girl helping her mom as a translator in many places. Joan Broude had been a director of another school for adults and very much wanted to help immigrants. They believe that adults can learn English. Diane and Joan like to help adult people to learn English. In November 1992, they realized the dream to open this school (the ILC). Now the school has 280 people learning English from 60 countries. In conclusion, one student asked her: “Do you think you have realized your goals?” “Yes,”she said “I’m always still working, I’ll never finish…”
