    Adult Numeracy Network
    ANN, an affiliate of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, is devoted to teaching adults mathematics.The Web site includes a section on publications and resources as well as other information of use to those who teach adults numeracy

    Assessment Strategies and Reading Profiles
    This website is based on the Adult Reading Components Study (ARCS) done by researchers from the National Center for the Stuidy of Adult Learning and Lirteracy. ARCS assessed the reading of 955 adult learners. The researchers tested participants individually on eleven skills (components) that contribute to reading ability. A list of scores for each learner became that individual's reading profile, illustrating his or her strengths and instructional needs. On this website, 569 Adult Basic Education (ABE) learners from the ARCS are grouped into 11 profiles. Each profile group shows a distinctive pattern and/or level of reading component skills.

    For students and teachers. Awesome Stories
    Awesome stories describes itself as "the story place on the web," and includes descriptions and primary source background materials on current popular movies, American history, religion, disasters, famous trials, biography, religion, inspiration and the law. The background materials come from the Library of Congress, National Archives, the British Museum and universities, libraries historical societies and museums from around the world. Each story has "chapters" and links to the source material. The "Flicks" area may be of particular interest as students can take an interesting film, view it, and read the plot and source materials which put it in context. Martin Scorsese's "Gangs of New York," for example might be an eye-opener forrecent immigrants into a difficult time for immigrants in 19th century America.

    Civic Participation and Community Action Sourcebook
    The sourcebook and some of its activities are online. The purpose of the sourcebook is "to present a range of tools that can help readers examine their own beliefs about community, citizenship, democracy, etc.; identify and analyze issues that concern them; and build skills and strategies to take informed action."

    Equipped for the Future (EFF)Teaching/LearningToolkit
    The EFF Toolkit is a resource for teachers who want to build curriculum around students' goals and life contexts. While the Toolkit is based on the Equipped for the Future Teaching/Learning Cycle and the EFF Standards, the Examples and Tools in the Toolkit are a resource for any teacher who wants to contextualize instruction. Examples are complete descriptions of particular lessons and are organized by content and by instructional setting. The Tools used in the Examples are linked and often include worksheets that can be dowloaded.

    This New Brunswick, Canada Web site has free and inexpensive on-line GED learning resources.

    GED Preparation
    A comprehensive set of GED preparation information sites and specific Web-based instruction in GED language arts, writing, mathemaics, sicience and social studies. Designed for teachers working in young adult education programs these sites are also applicable for adult secondary ecucation.

    GCFLearnFree.org
    There are several kinds of attractive, interactive lessons in three areas: Everyday Life, Basic math, and Computer Training. Everyday Life includes: using financial literacy skills such as: using an ATM, making a deposit, and getting cash back; every day writing reading and skills such as: filling out a time sheet, making a grocery list, or checking a receipt; reading and math for cooking: measuring, mixing and baking; navigating a city using a bus or subway; and job readiness skills such as reading classified ads and filling out a job application, and others. Computer Tarining includes how to use commercial and free word processing, database and spreadsheet programs.

    Harnessing Technology
    This Web page includes common problems faced by ABE and ESL/ESOL teachers in the classroom, and solutions to these problems which use technology.  Teachers are encouraged to send their own technology solutions which may be added to Harnessing Technology.

    This bi-annual newspaper for adult education teachers and learners (available free online and by subscription in hard copy for $10/year) promotes social action as an important part of the adult learning experience and enables both teachers and learners to make civic participation and social justice part of their learning. Each issue explores a different social justice topic through news articles, opinion pieces, classroom activities and lessons, poems, cartoons, interviews, project descriptions, and printed and web-based resources.

    For students and teachers. The Northern Edge
    The design of this adult learner newspaper is visually attractive, and easy to navigate. It uses state-of-the-art video and plain English text -- appropriately tailored to learners' interests in Canada's northwest. For U.S. teachers and learners, don't dismiss this because it's focused on Canadian-specific issues and realities. Some U.S. students will find this interesting -- and many in the U.S. could benefit from learning more about the country's northern neighbor. Those who are interested in learning which is connected to students' lives, and appreciate well-designed Web-based readings for low-intermediate level readers, will find this a fine model.
